5 ways a workplace gym adds value beyond wellness

A leading financial services company based in Indianapolis, Ind. partnered with HealthFitness to manage and provide programs for its multi-tenant 8,448-square-foot corporate fitness center. HealthFitness is charged with engaging 2,200 employees across the 12 tenants in the building in their health and fitness.
Employees engage in cardio and strength training, group fitness, personal training, massage and robust health and fitness programming.
Here are five ways the on-site gym adds value beyond wellness.
1. Creating connections and community
Employees have shared that working out at the corporate fitness center is the best part of their day.
“My workout motivation starts in the fitness center. I love my gym friends and the staff! We all need community, and the fitness center community is so important to me,” one member said.
“I really appreciate the effort you make to say hello and build relationships with me and the other members. Best gym experience I have had,” another member said.
2. Building relationships and fitness goals
The HealthFitness team focuses on building relationships and continually reaches out to individuals with suggestions to help members succeed with their goals.
Fitness team member Shaylin says it’s easier to make meaningful connections in person at the gym. “When a member checks in at the front desk, we know their name and are ready to help,” she said. “We take time build rapport, learn more about them and dive in a little deeper to get to know them.”
And members clearly appreciate this personal level of service. HealthFitness recently received a 100% client satisfaction rating and staff were praised for their flexibility and dedication to meet the needs of the members.
3. Providing a place to recharge
Shaylin has noticed a shift in why members are working out. “We’ve had people come back for their physical health as well as their mental health,” she said. “Members view it as a break from everything. They get to leave their desk and their computer. They come here and feel better physically and mentally. Some people say this place is their refuge—it’s a great outlet.”
Not only do members boost their physical and mental health, but they also enjoy the activity. As a recent member of the month said, “Thank you for your advice and the welcoming community you've built at the fitness center. I am beyond humbled to be recognized when in all honesty—and thanks in large part to the staff—coming into the gym consistently has been as much fun as hard work.”
4. Delivering value and accountability
By offering an open house with free group exercise classes to get people interested, Shaylin also provides fitness assessments for new members and helps keep them accountable to their fitness goals. “Once they experience the value of working out at the fitness center, they are hooked,” she said. “We’re proud of the work we do because many members say they are still with the company because they have an on-site fitness center.”
5. Meeting people where they are
Through providing fitness programs, challenges, education and group exercise classes, the HealthFitness team reaches people where they are and helps them make connections.
