Creating a culture of care at a leading pharma company

A leading pharmaceutical manufacturing company partnered with HealthFitness to create strong relationships with its employees and engage them in their health and wellness. The company’s 4,000 employees work at a large corporate campus with multiple buildings —including three fitness centers.

The connections made by HealthFitness staff have turned into long-lasting relationships and allow the employee population to feel cared for and that they belong—before, during and after the pandemic.

Challenge
Before the pandemic, more than 2,000 employees were members of the three packed fitness centers, where the HealthFitness team provided a busy and continuous schedule of health and fitness programming.

When the pandemic forced a shutdown of the fitness centers, the HealthFitness staff were challenged with how to continue meaningful programming and make and maintain meaningful connections so that employees could continue to thrive during the shutdown and when they were back on-site.

Solution
The HealthFitness staff showed up for the employees in different ways that allowed them to maintain their connections, starting with a daily wellness email. “The email was the only consistent communication our members could rely on and it let them know that we cared about them,” Program Manager Megan said.

And the members did feel cared for: “Thank you for your emails and your motivation to exercise and keep healthy,” one member said.

They also met with more employees virtually to create meaningful connections. The team used this time to create intentional programming to meet the needs of the virtual workforce, such as stretch breaks and educational classes.

Results
The HealthFitness team realized the benefits of keeping that connection strong as it was put on display when membership grew from 0 to 500 in the six months after the fitness centers reopened in September 2021.

Past members were referring new members at a high rate because of the intentional and consistent programming and connections that the team maintained throughout the pandemic—starting with Megan’s daily email. As one member said, “The emails have been so helpful during this stressful time. It’s so important to keep people positive and active.”
