Town of West Hartford confronts growing risk of loneliness in seniors

The Town of West Hartford’s Cornerstone Aquatics Center has been a fixture in the community for nearly 60 years. In 1991, the Aquatics Center had significant renovations adding an 11 lane competition pool, a large therapeutic pool and a small workout room. In 2017, the town partnered with HealthFitness to manage the day-to-day operations of the facility.

Challenge: One-third of individuals age 45+ may experience loneliness1
Social isolation and loneliness become increasingly more common as individuals age. This is an area of focus for the Town of West Hartford as the senior population is growing with 17.7% of residents over the age of 65 in 2017 (national rate is 14.9%).2

Solution: Focus on expansion of healthy living and fitness programming
With the partnership between the town and HealthFitness in 2017, focus was placed on providing more options for Cornerstone Aquatics Center members. HealthFitness staff focused on facility improvements and expansions of offerings, including aquatic fitness classes designed specifically for the senior population.

As a result, seniors make up 70% of all aquatic fitness class participants and report that the classes have helped them feel less lonely. Download the Town of West Hartford Case Study to learn more about the results.
