5 reasons employers should care about employee happiness

At HealthFitness, we believe total wellbeing matters. Scientists have discovered that physical and mental health are closely tied together, so employers can no longer focus on just physical health if they want to improve the wellbeing of their employees. A big part of employee wellbeing is impacted by a person’s happiness. Plus, employee happiness can affect work environments, and your bottom line. Here’s why:

1. Happy employees show up.
When an employee is happy and engaged, they show up to work. Highly engaged teams see a 41% decrease in absenteeism1.

2. Happy employees stay.
Employees who are happy and enjoy their workplace tend to stay longer. In fact, teams with high engagement levels see 59% less turnover1. Training new employees is expensive, so keeping them longer helps your bottom line.

3. Happy employees make happy customers.
When employees are happy they are more engaged, more likely to be attentive to the customer and more likely to have a positive attitude, providing better service to your customer. A Gallup report shows that employees who are more engaged are more likely to improve customer relationships, resulting in a 20% increase in sales2. Another study by the Temkin Group showed that companies who excel at customer experience have 1.5 times as many engaged employees as those who lag in customer experience2.

4. Happy customers come back.
Across all industries surveyed, 48% of U.S. consumers indicate that friendly, welcoming service is what defines a successful experience3. Positive experiences influence customers purchasing decisions in almost every industry, but this is especially influential in healthcare (78%), banking (75%), restaurants (74%) and hotels (74%)3. On the flip side, 32% of customers would stop doing business with a brand they loved after one bad experience and 59% would walk away after several bad experiences3.

5. Happy customers pay more.
Every industry saw a potential price bump for providing a positive customer experience, but luxury and indulgence purchases benefit the most with an average price premium of 13%3. That said, customers aren’t willing to pay more for bells and whistles unless core elements of the customer experience are met.
